GC 2018 comm games village mar14Construction company Grocon has been appointed as the preferred developer of the 29-hectare Games Village site and will erect 30 buildings and a retail centre on seven hectares of the Parklands site. The Village, contained in a more limited area, will provide essential services and accommodation for 6,500 athletes and officials in Games-mode and will be one of the Games' most significant legacy projects. There will be more than 1,200 permanent apartments and townhouses ranging from one to 8 levels.

After the Games, the site will be developed into a planned health and knowledge precinct, integrating with the existing hospital and university. Funding is not yet in place. UBS/Grocon Real Estate have formed a vehicle for this purpose.  UBS Global Asset Management is one of the top five global real estate investment managers.

Architects working with Grocon have been ARM Architecture, Arkhefield and Archipelago. The developers who were shortlisted in June 2013 were Grocon, a partnership between Mirvac Queensland and Laing O’Rourke Australia and Village Park Consortium – comprising Australand Holdings Ltd and Citta Property Group.

The project will inject $500 million into the local economy over the next 5 years and is expected to create more than 1500 jobs in the construction sector.
